Automotive Art: Photographing Classic Cars with Character

Classic cars aren't just machines — they're sculptures. Here's how I approach automotive photography to capture the soul of vintage vehicles.

Automotive Art: Photographing Classic Cars with Character

There's a reason classic cars end up in museums and auction houses alongside fine art. A 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 isn't just transportation — it's a sculpture of steel, glass, and leather that represents the pinnacle of mid-century design. Photographing these machines requires the same reverence you'd bring to any work of art.

Location and Context

Where you photograph a car matters as much as how you photograph it. I look for settings that complement the vehicle's era and character — herringbone brick for a vintage Ferrari, desert highway for a classic American cruiser, an empty garage with directional light for moody detail work. The environment should enhance the car's story without competing for attention.

Light and Reflections

Automotive bodywork is essentially a curved mirror. Every surface reflects its surroundings, which means controlling the environment controls the image. Overcast days provide soft, even light that wraps around curves beautifully. For more dramatic work, I use the low angle of golden hour to create long highlights along body lines and fenders.

Detail Work

The wide shot tells you what the car is. The details tell you who it is. Chrome badges, stitched leather, engine components, the sweep of a fender line — these close-ups reveal the craftsmanship that makes classic cars special. I shoot details with shallow depth of field to isolate elements and draw the viewer into the texture and materials.

Working with Collectors and Auction Houses

I've had the privilege of working with Sotheby's and RM Sothebys, photographing vehicles destined for major auctions. These assignments demand precision — every angle needs to be covered, every detail documented, and the images need to convey the quality and provenance that justify six- and seven-figure price tags. There's no room for missed shots when the car ships out the next morning.

Whether it's a barn find Packard or a concours-ready Ferrari, every classic car has a personality. My job is to find the angle, the light, and the moment that reveals it.
